The Drawing Season

Check out this review of The Kohler Museum's series of exhibits based around the line...

Recently, I also have become very interested in the line and how it can be used. For much of my art making life, I've concentrated on color and working with the composition of many shapes and forms...in the last year, however, I have begun to stray, becoming much more interested in the varied line, the rushed line, the repetitive line, the bold line...and it's really made for some interesting development in my work. I think, automatically, it brings the piece to a basic level. You see a shape, an object, a pattern, and you begin to look for things you recognize. With line, we are almost, as the viewer, required to follow, giving the artist quite a tool in direction.

Line becomes an extension of the artist's hand itself...like a shadow, or a wake left behind by a boat. It's a static symbol of creation, the act of creation, and in result for the viewer, the act of discovering that creation.

Here's a few examples of my work that deals with line in it's most basic form...

The Physical Line

The Frantic Line

The Structured Line

The Varied Line

The Bold, Meandering Line

The Moving Line

Line as Symbol
