Holes.

This is an idea for an earth art piece.

The basis of it is extremely simple...just two big ol holes in the ground...but the concept and visual impact are far more complex. Depending on where the holes are, the meaning changes. If in a parking lot, they may comment on how our modern lives are missing the great and obvious benefits of nature...how we have lost the connection to the earth. Placed in a forest, they may speak to the destruction of land, how we barely notice in our everyday lives, yet how obvious it is if we simply look where it's happening. Also, the meaning can change depending on what's in the holes, if you can see the bottom, or if something is emerging from the openings.

Obviously, it's not thought out and has a far way to go, but I like the idea...Usually I want something large, monolithic standing before you, almost looming over the viewer, but this creates a very different relationship. The viewer becomes the oppressor, looking down, investigating the holes, deciding what they mean. A statue can demand attention and tell a story. A hole requires you to walk to the edge, to offer yourself to the opening in order to see it. It has a story to tell but asks for action on your part, or else they become dark lines from across a field, dark shadows from a distance away...It's a much more involved process as a viewer...and that's something I'm not sure I've ever latched onto before.
