Sounds pretty ridiculous, but new research says that an unusually close moon rose tides to a high and unusual level allowing larger than average icebergs, and more than average, to escape their northern waters and venture into the southern shipping lanes.
Not like that heals the wounds 100 years removed, but it does explain why there were such an unusually high number of icebergs in the area, why they were so much bigger than usual, and why Capt. Smith probably questioned the report and thought there wouldn't be a problem...
