It's Just Too Bad: College Football 2011

Did anyone watch that game last night? Well sadly, I dedicated about ten minutes of my life over the first half to vaguely flipping channels between the game and "How The Universe Works." To tell the truth, the HTUW episode was better...and I'd already seen it before.

But really... I understand good defense and I like good defense. I watched GB play the entire year last year with the #2 defense in the league and loved every minute. I like a good defensive battle. The thing I don't like is an offense running face-first at a wall for 60 minutes. I don't like a 6-0 halftime score with one offense not getting past the 50. I don't like endless 3 and outs and feeling like a game is over when the first team hits 12. I don't like no drama...having the game decided by computers 40 DAYS before its played. I don't like rusty players, having over a month of no games. Not to mention that the teams already played...not to mention that this is the cap of the season...not to mention there was no suspense in the buildup...it's a rematch....of a game that was actually MORE exciting than this one.

Teams have bad games in all sports, no matter what the situation. I get that. But the thing that really made this game pathetic was everything surrounding that ON TOP of neither offense realizing that you win with MORE points than the other team. If there had been a playoff leading to these teams meeting, it would have been more interesting. If there hadn't been 40 days between the end of the season and the game, it would have been more interesting. If they had not played previously, and that game had not been 9-6, it would have been more interesting. This was simply one of the worst situated National Championships that I've ever seen. It wasn't fun, it was suspenseful, it wasn't exciting. It featured some GREAT defense and that should be noted, but the overall lack of interest I had when announced, leading up to, and during the game was just astounding. It could have been the special kids regional curling championships and I would have paid as much attention...actually, I'd probably watch that more intently.

Give Bama their due. They played great defense, their offense remembered their playbook, and they simply SHUT DOWN the favored LSU. They deserve it. Its just too bad that no one but Bama fans care. It's too bad that the college season came down to a less-than-anticipated rematch that didn't live up to the original. It's too bad that the college season ended with us not talking about the great plays that determined the championship, but complaining about a playoff.

I guess that's a pretty good wrap-up of a tumultuous college season though...with the Penn State and Syracuse sex scandals, with the Alabama tornado and OK St. plane crash, with the Miami and Ohio State violations...College Football 2011, "It's just too bad."
